De betekenis van Windows log files

Introductie

Met de log files van Windows bedoel ik niet de inhoud van het console Logboeken.

Veel van de logs waar ik het hier over ga hebben staan in de map \Windows\Logs, of in een submap daarvan.

CBS.log (o.a. uitvoer van System File Checker)

Deze file is te vinden in \Windows\Logs\CBS\
De naam staat voor Component Based Servicing.

Als je hem probeert te openen is er een goede kans dat je de melding
Access is denied krijgt. Kopiëren van de file kan vaak wel.

System File Checker

Alle regels die sfc naar deze file schrijft bevatten de tekens [SR]. Je kan dus met een editor de kopie van CBS.log doorzoeken, maar het is handiger om al die regels naar een andere file te schrijven. Je doet dat als volgt.

Open een opdrachtregel in elevated mode.

Tik in:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log > output-file-naam

Die file kan je daarna gewoon in een editor bekijken.

De betekenis van de output van sfc wordt voor Vista hier uitgelegd, maar voor Windows 7 zal het niet veel anders zijn.

Blijkbaar worden er sowieso voor elke 100 geverifieerde files 3 regels weggeschreven van het volgende type:

Hier een voorbeeld onder Windows 10 van een probleemsituatie. Ik heb bovenstaand findstr-commando uitgevoerd, en ben in het uitvoerbestand gaan zoeken naar het woord 'Repairing'. Dat leverde de volgende regels op:

Het bestand dat genoemd wordt heeft te maken met een traditioneel Chinees lettertype. Ik had er wel wat problemen mee, maar of die lagen aan deze corruptie of aan mijn onkunde (ik gebruik bijna nooit de traditionele karakters) weet ik niet.

Bootlog

Dit bestand bevat de log van wat er gebeurt tijdens het starten van de PC. Hij wordt alleen aangemaakt als je daarvoor gekozen hebt (standaard niet). Zie mijn pagina over bootproblemen.

Internet Explorer log

Ik weet niet voor welke versies van Internet Explorer dit allemaal geldt, maar in elk geval voor versies 8 en 9.

Er blijkt een log bijgehouden te worden van deïnstallaties en installaties van Internet Explorer.

De betreffende file heet %windir%\ieversie_main.log , bv. D:\Windows\ie8_main.log (ik heb Windows op schijf D staan, en gebruik Internet Explorer 8).

Een klein voorbeeldje van wat je in deze log kunt aantreffen (in dit geval heb ik blijkbaar de installatie voortijdig beëindigd, zie de laatste regel):

Windows Update log

Ik heb mezelf nog niet verdiept in de inhoud van het bestand, maar onder in elk geval XP t/m Windows 7 lijkt er tijdens het uitvoeren van Windows Update een log bijgehouden te worden.

Het logbestand heet %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log, bv. C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

Microsoft heeft wel een uitgebreid artikel ( Engelse versie) over de betekenis ervan.
N.B.: De Nederlandse versie is een automatische (rampzalig slechte) vertaling.

In het begin van het artikel wordt uitgelegd wat de kolommen betekenen, maar het zal niet iedereen duidelijk zijn waar PID en TID (de 3e en 4e kolom) voor staan. PID is het process id, en TID is het thread id.

Ik ga vanaf nu na elke Windows Update in dit bestand kijken, en als ik interessante dingen tegenkom zullie die hier vermeld worden.

Praktijkvoorbeeld 1: 1 .NET Framework 4 update op XP machine lukt niet (WU zegt succes)

Een verklaring van de process-id's: 1984 is een svchost.exe

Er waren nog een hoop andere processen bij de update betrokken (zoals de setup.exe), maar die hebben kennelijk niets gelogd.

Ik heb de indruk dat als er met Windows update of handmatig een versie van .NET Framework wordt bijgewerkt, er een log van wordt aangemaakt.

De logs belanden onder Windows 7 in de map schijfletter:\Users\gebruikersnaam\ AppData\Local\Temp, bv. C:\Users\Henk\AppData\Local\Temp
Onder XP komen ze terecht in schijfletter:Documents and Settings\ gebruikersnaam\Local Settings\Temp, bv. D:\Documents and Settings\Henk\Local Settings\Temp

De logs zelf heten ASPNETSetup_xxxxx.log, waarbij xxxxx een volgnummer is, bv. 00017

Om een voorbeeld te geven van het soort inhoud dat je kan tegenkomen hieronder de korste (van de 43) die ik op mijn XP systeem kon vinden. Je kan zien dat het om .NET Framework versie 2 gaat. Verder lijken de Internal flags mij zeer interessant, maar ik moet nog uitzoeken wat de betekenis ervan is.

Deze log bevat uitvoer van de System Update Readiness Tool, die je bij Microsoft kunt downloaden.

De log staat in \Windows\Logs\CBS, en heet CheckSUR.log

Zo te zien was er nogal wat mis: 339 fouten gevonden, 334 ge-fixed.

WIA log

Deze log (met de naam wiatrace.log bevindt zich in de map c:\Windows\Debug\WIA (aannemende dat Windows op de C-schijf geïnstalleerd is.

WIA staat voor Windows Image Acquisition. Die Windows-component zorgt ervoor dat grafische software kan communiceren met apparaten die iets doen met plaatjes, zoals scanners en digitale camera's. Zie ook deze Wikipedia-pagina (Engels).

Er hoort een service bij deze log, nl. stisvc (servicenaam). (STI staat voor Still Image Architecture, en was al aanwezig onder Windows 98.) De display name is gewoon Windows Image Acquisition.

.NET Runtime Optimization Service logs

Als je in Logboeken (Event Viewer) foutmeldingen ziet van .NET Runtime Optimization Service , dan kan het helpen om de bijbehorende log files te bekijken.

Voor gebeurtenis .NET Runtime Optimization Service, 1130 zijn dat de volgende bestanden:

In de 1e regel zie je dat het programma ngen.exe wordt uitgevoerd.
In de 2e regel (vetgedrukt) zie je dat het fout gaat (wat het precies betekent weet ik (nog) niet).
En in de 3e regel zie je de foutcode, 0xffffffff

Het lijkt erop als het systeem het vervolgens gewoon opnieuw gaat proberen (tussen vierkante haken zie je nu een ander getal, 5088, d.w.z. dat er een nieuw proces is gestart), en aan het eind ziet je als code 0x00000000 (0 betekent meestal dat het goed is gegaan).
