Introduction

Maar has 2 clear meanings.

First, it can be a conjuction, and just means 'but'.
Example: Ik ga een nieuwe computer kopen, maar hij mag niet duurder zijn dan 400 Euro (I'm going to by a new computer, but it shouldn't be more expensive than 400 Euro).

The second meaning is 'no more then'.
Example: Hij heeft maar 3 maanden aan de universiteit gestudeerd (he studied no longer than 3 months at the university).

The difficult part of 'maar'

The best English translations would be 'just', 'as long as'.

Examples:

• Als we maar niet te laat komen!: As long as we don't arrive too late (at the airport, in the cinema, etc.);
• Ik snap deze vraag niet, dus ik schrijf maar wat op : I don't understand this question, so I just write something down;
• De hond blijft maar blaffen: The dog just goes on barking.
